Why we teach online
Online has real advantages and two real weaknesses. Here are both, and what we do about the weaknesses.
What online does better
No commute
No driving, no traffic, no travel time on either side of the lesson.
A schedule that fits
Lessons sit around school, sport and revision, and can be moved when something comes up.
Recorded on request
Ask and the lesson is recorded, so any explanation can be rewatched later.
Anywhere with a connection
Home, a relative’s house, or abroad over the holidays. The lesson still happens.
Where it falls short
A student can drift when nobody else is in the room.
Cameras and mics stay on at both ends for the whole lesson. The tutor can see when attention goes, and says so at the time.
A tutor cannot lean over the desk and watch the working.
A live Miro whiteboard runs on a second screen. The student writes their working there and the tutor watches it appear line by line, while the lesson stays on the main screen.
This does not make online better than sitting in the same room. It does close most of the gap, and the flexibility is real.
